LEARNING FOREIGN LANGUAGE
M ihsan Dacholfany (mhs UHAMKA FKIP Bhs Inggris tahun 2998)
English is undoubtedly becoming increasingly important nowadays. It has also been an important part of studying foreign language. People realize how important it is to learn this language and they hope they can use it whenever it is needed as a basic of their further study at they university level as far life in the society.
I. Definition of Learning
Many researchers have different definitions about learning. Here, the writer gives two definitions as follows;
1. Learning is acquiring of getting of knowledge of a subject or skill by study, experience, or instruction. (Extract from contemporary dictionaries).
2. Learning is a relatively permanent change in a behavioral tendency and is the result of reinforced practice (Kimble and Garmezy).
From those definitions the writer tries to make components that develop a learning as follows:
1. Learning is acquisition or getting.
2. Learning is retention of information or skill.
3. Retention implies storage system, memory, cognitive organization.
4. Learning involves active, conscious focus on and acting upon events outside or inside the organism.
5. Learning is relatively permanent change, perhaps reinforced practice.
6. Learning is a change in behavior.
II. Theory of Language Learning
Learning language is a process in the mind; it observes, organizes and stores information.
The scientists have developed some theory of language acquisition. The theories become basic thinking in developing English Language Teaching (ELT).
1. Behaviorism; learning as habit formation
This theory was developed by Pavlov (Soviet Union) and Skinner (United States). This simple but powerful theory said that learning is a mechanical process of habit formation and proceeds by means of the frequent reinforcement of a stimulus-response sequence. It provided the theoretical underpinning of the widely used Audio lingual Method. This method based on behaviorist stimulus-response concept and assumption that second language learning should reflect imitates the perceived process of mother tongue learning.
The basic exercises technique of a behaviorist methodology is pattern practice, particularly in the form of language laboratory drills.
2. Mentalism; thinking as rule-governed activity.
This theory said that learning is a process in which individual experiences are used by the mind to formulate a hypothesis. This hypothesis is then tested and modified by subsequent experience. The mind responds to find the pattern or system not following it.
The mentalist view of the mind as a rule seeker led naturally to the next important stage of learning.
3. Cognitive code; learner as thinking beings.
Said that learning is as a process in which the learner actively tries to make sense of data and its pattern. In other word, we learn by thinking about and trying to make sense of what we see, feel and her.
The basic technique of language learning is the problem solving.
4. The affective factor; learner as emotional beings
This theory views learning is not only about machine and systems, but they still learn as human being. It combines cognitive aspect with emotional aspect.
Gardener and Lambert said that motivation has big role in improving learning, but exercises has a varying influence in each learners depend on age, experience and changing occupational or social needs.
III. Characteristic of Language Learner
Many factor need to be taken into account we considering the qualities of good learners.
However, these are some characteristic that should be had by language learner. As Jeremy Harmer (1998) said :
1. Willingness to listen; good learner listen to what’s going on, not just in the sense of paying attention, but also in terms of really listening to the English that is being used.
2. A willingness to experiment; many good learner are not afford to have a go. They are prepared to take risks, to try things out and how it works.
3. A willingness to ask questions; although some teachers can become irritates by students who are constantly asking difficult questions, the urge to find out why is part of a successful learner’s equipment.
4. A willingness to think about how to learn good learners bring or invent their own study skills when they come to a lesson (and/or when they study on their own).
5. A willingness to accept correction. Good learners are prepared to be corrected if it helps them. They are keen to get feedback from the teacher and act upon what they are told.
In the same way, David Nunan gave other characteristics of good learners, as follows:
1. Good learners find their own way.
2. Good learners organize information about language.
3. Good learners are creative and experiment with language.
4. Good learners make their own opportunities, and find strategies for getting practice in using the language.
5. Good learners make errors work.
6. Good learners let the context.
7. Good learners learn to make intelligent guesses.
8. Good learners learn production techniques. (e.g. technique for keeping a conversation and/or writing going)
IV. Responsibility for Learning
In many modern language institutes, a sizeable percentage of time is given over to ‘self-study’. Typically, the institute will have a large room equipped with textbooks, exercises, tape and video recorders, reference books such as dictionaries, grammars, fiction and non-fiction books, magazines, etc.
They can decide whether they want to go to the centre. In other words, and, once there, they can take charge, do what they think is best; take responsibility for their own learning.
Of course not every institute has self-access facilities. But the principle – that learners should take charge of their learning – is one that we need to promote with or without such physical resources.
However, we can use our institute library. If you feel it is not enough and you want to get more, you can use language laboratories and libraries facilitated by others institutions, such as British Council Library at Wijojo Centre Building, AMINEF Library at Balai Pustaka Building, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Library, LIA English Courses Libraries, etc.
The underlying philosophy behind self-access centers is that students who are prepared to take such responsibility for their own learning (by studying in their own time, doing homework, thinking carefully about what should be best for them) are good learners. Good learners, in other words, don’t just wait to be taught.
V. Conclusion
Each persons has different own learning style and strategy for learning languages. And we should know what we are ours according to the suitable learning we want.
But the main point of all is how we become good learners and realize that responsibility for learning is on own students.
